When we saw how our SoCal itinerary was going to play out, we invited ourselves to join David and Karen for an evening of theatrical merriment.
We were fortunate to see, In the Heights, a surprisingly wonderful production by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of the current Broadway hit Hamilton. This musical tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.
The merriment was enhanced due to the fact that we were celebrating David's birthday, too.
Added bonus: cupcakes and a birthday song at intermission!
It isn't often that a production is so completely amazing, where all the components come together to make excellence. We felt In the Heights accomplished that and so much more (and it made Steve cry). What a night.

What a great play it must be...that is one I would like to see. I miss those types of entertainment. Today there is such violence...it must have been nice to reminisce of how things "used" to be.
I have only been once, but I would like to go back! It is an ideal venue. I love that you can bring your own stuff (cheese, crackers, birthday cake... all of the necessities). Taking in your own wine isn't allowed, right?
