Pacific House, CA

We pass this intriguing outpost every time we drive on Highway 50, today I had Steve stop.

Pacific (1859) was an original toll house and stage stop in the early years of the gold rush.   Renamed Pacific 'House', when the town of Pacifica came to be, it was a later day stopping place with rooms and meals for the drovers, and barns and corrals for the cattle being driven up the hill for the summer and fall.  Even the Pony Express made a mail drop here.
You wouldn't know it by looking at it today, but Pacific House became a well-known resting stop along the trail. The hotel housed many famous people, including Mark Twain.
Highway 50 follows the general route of several historic wagon roads, many of which were built atop existing Indian trails, which led emigrants into Placerville at the heart of the California gold fields. "America's Gateway to the West"leads us to many interesting locales and each time we take it, we learn something new.

Do you remember how to go behind the cabins to catch trout? I cant find the trail. Two old men would go down behind the 4th cabin, and come out with two buckets filled with their limit on trout when I was little.

I used to live and work there with the Johnson family in the mid 80s. Gene Long bought it and his wife Lori and her brothers Frank DJ and Lori's daughter Tina and I lived there. The boys worked in the garage auto shop doing automotive work for another brother Dennis. Frank & I lived in a trailer around bldg. Dennis lived in cabin and Lori and Gene lived inside bar area upstairs. It was sure nice. I heard DJs son took it over Denny Johnson.
