My brother, Chuck, is here...

After a fantastic weekend at the Reno Air Races, Chuck will finish his week, here with us.  What fun to share the Tahoe area with him.

Our first stop was the quaint town of Truckee.  Recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it proudly retains its historic roots. Named for a Paiute Indian chief who helped guide thousands of emigrants in their westward journey through 40-mile desert. Truckee (1844) is well known for its logging, ice manufacturing, the Emigrant Trail, as well as for the tragic expedition of the Donner Party.
Being in the area, we had to stop at the Pioneer Monument, built to commemorate those who emigrated to California from the east in the mid-1800's.  We had to learn more about one of the earliest pioneer wagon trains, the Donner Party, forced by circumstances to camp at the east end of Donner Lake in the winter of 1846-47, resulting in human suffering, loss of life and a terrible reputation of cannibalism.
Since none of us had ever been to Squaw Valley, it was our next destination.
The historical marker at the Pioneer Ski Area was placed in 1960 during VIII Olympic Winter Games to commemorate 100 years of skiing in California and the first televised Olympic Games. One hundred years later in 1960, one thousand competitors from 34 nations arrived in Squaw Valley to participate in the winter games (thus putting Tahoe on the map). Squaw Valley first opened as a world class ski resort in 1949.
Since we had all been to Ireland, last year, a visit to the Village's Pub was in order.  To sit in the sun, people watching, was a great afternoon pastime.
Our neighborhood bear saga continues.  After dinner, we all sat on the porch and waited for him to make the Monday night, trash cans are out, trek.  We were not disappointed.  It makes us very sad to see this guy scavenging.
We have tourism, fun activities, good food and memory-making planned.  It's going to be a great week!

What a day... big chairs, beers, bears, butt eating (or is that just the part that I would eat...). :)
