A private tea with Mrs. Tevis

During the Gatsby Festival, I entered a silent auction and won Tea with Mrs. Tevis for a dozen amazing ladies and today, during a late summer rain storm we gathered on the veranda of the charming Tevis-Pope Estate.
Mrs. William Tevis (Mabella -- daughter of California's first Hispanic governor, Romualdo Pacheco) was a gracious hostess and Laurel, a Forest Service employee, did a fantastic job playing her.  We were all impressed.
Tea was served exquisitely and we were well cared for by the staff.
"Strange how a teapot can represent at the same time
the comforts of solitude and the pleasures of company."
An added surprise was a tour of the Tevis-Pope home, a first for many of our group.  In 1894, George P. Tallant built a 2,000 square foot rustic-style summer cabin on this site. Five years later,  Lloyd Tevis, the first CEO of Wells Fargo Bank (in San Francisco) began the long process of purchasing the home but died before it was complete.  His son, businessman William Tevis and his wife Mabella Pacheco bought it and expanded it to more than twice its original size. The grounds include numerous outbuildings, an arboretum, and a pond.  The interior was spectacular.  We ended our tour in the kitchen where we delighted in learning even more about this amazing place.
The afternoon was a trip back in time, learning old history with new friends.
