The Camel Races in Virginia City...

There is so much to say about our day in historic Virginia City, NV but this post is just going to focus on the 53rd Annual International Camel Races that we attended today!

First off, the four words I never thought I would say out loud are, "I rode a camel" (in a skirt no less).  I'm telling about the day, for the most part in photos.  We're beat, albeit very happy.  This event was the first of its kind for us and our friends, Ray and Nancy.  I think you can see how much fun this entire experience was.

About the races, in 1960, on the 100th anniversary of the first camel to arrive courtesy of the U.S. Army (who first brought camels to the arid American West and consequently to the Comstock where they were used to transport salt for the reduction of ore and to carry general supplies to the growing Boomtown), Virginia City would play host and challenge those far and near to an annual event that would test the riding skills of anyone willing and able to stay mounted from a starting point to a finish line.  In 1962, they added ostriches.  I'm not quite sure when the zebras got involved.

What an unbelievable day!
