Airport...Beach...Ikea...PERFETTO!
After an early morning drive to FCO to assist Franc D'Ambrosio on his way back to New York, Steve, Kegan and I decided that since we were so close to Rome's beach, Ostia, we would check it out. Most don't think of Rome as a beach destination, but the airport is very close to the Mediterranean, so off we went.
There are many differences between the 'beach experience' here vs at home. The one I found interesting was that most of the seashore here is private. You have to pay for the privilege to be there but with that entrance fee you get an umbrella, lounge chair, nice places to eat and to change your clothes.
Being as we were only going to stay for a couple hours, we drove until we found spiaggia libera. There we were greeted by salesmen offering everything from hats and towels to bracelets and beer!
The lifeguard stand was a little seaside shack where the salvataggio hung out all day with his family and friends (listening for screams for help, definitely not watching for drowning victims).
The beauty of all the beaches in Italy, to me, is the freedom of the bikini! Every woman of any size, age and shape wears one proudly. There is no look of disapproval which is a very freeing day for us with a little too much jiggle.
After our time in the sun and sea, we planned for lunch to be meatballs at IKEA, since it was on the way home anyway. It is one of our favorite food fixes in any country! If you look past the buon appetito on the wall and the large bottles of olive oil on the tables, you could be in an IKEA anywhere! Delicious and fun. What a perfect day for all of us!

Don't forget the Speedo's for the men. (not that I could ever where one) What a fun day. Kegan is the spitten image of his dad.
Jiggle on you? You must be joking - you should sport that bikini with pride!!
Are you kidding? I totally appreciate woman of all sizes sporting bikinis. I enjoy looking good by comparison. hahaha.
Looks like you had another amazing beach day! I think we are going on Sunday. Hopefully to surf. There will be no beer. :( But plenty of vigilant lifeguards. :)
