The library in the Palazzo...

Today, Gilberto introduced us to the staff of the public library.  Tomorrow, we will begin volunteering there.  We were told of many opportunities available to us, so we're very, very excited.  And, we will get library cards.  How wonderful is that!?  I hope to begin reading children's literature and move up in difficulty.  One can hope.

The library is absolutely amazing.  It is housed in Palazzo Mauri (ca. 1600) which was built by Andrea Mauri, the Prefect General of Post and Customs.  The façade of the palace features elegant windows and the interior has important, breathtaking frescoes.

The palace passed to the Commune in 1918. During a recent excavation the remains of a Roman mosaic and of Roman baths were discovered.

The museum atmosphere and importance of Spoleto's library confirms my sentiments of the value of books and reading.  We are so looking forward to working with the people of our new "hometown" in this spectacular setting.
