Almost Somewhere: Twenty-Eight Days on the John Muir Trail

The first presenter for our Friends of the Library Programs was Suzanne Roberts sharing her memoir...

After college, Suzanne and two girlfriends embarked on the John Muir Trail, the premier hiking trail in the United States. This adventure typically starts in Yosemite, and continues 215 miles through the Ansel Adams Wilderness, Sequoia National Park, King's Canyon National Park, and ends at the highest peak in continental United States, Mount Whitney at 14,496 ft.  But Suzanne's hiking partner reversed their path to get the hard part over first.
These tales, told with humor and fantastic photos, kept us mesmerized.
I was sent this wonderful review of the evening:
What a bang-up start to our FOL program year!  Suzanne Roberts has the ability to present a great deal of information of interest to a Tahoe audience in a fast-paced, humorous and always-interesting style.  We are lucky to have her among us and lucky to have you organizing such treats for our community.  The large audience was completely engaged.

A Heavenly Party...

How could we not go to this?  What a night!
The 14th Annual Ski Patrol Fundraiser and community celebration is a must go-to event. Head down the Gondola and to the top of Heavenly Village parking garage!

The bands Jelly Bread, The Devastators and Deep Fried Mojo will be playing live music and there will be a silent auction, drink specials, great food, raffle prizes, and more.

All proceeds benefit local non-profits and the fundraiser is open to everyone! There is a $10 donation and you'll be nothing short of entertained with activities for the smaller to the bigger kids (face painting, live music, dancing, dunk tank, Avalanche Rescue Dogs, and various drinks.) Help give back to the community that gives to you!

We had an incredible night.  We toasted to the fact that we were all at a rooftop party for the very first time!  Jenny and I got our photo taken with Martin Hollay (a Heavenly Legend).  We danced as a storm was brewing.  What an incredible place... and we live here!

An Eagle Released back into the Wild...

Our friends, Bob, Jenny and Bruce, are active volunteers for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care and today I was invited to witness an amazing event- the flight of an eagle.

This beautiful Bald Eagle was brought to the center in December with a hurt wing.  His rehab involved confinement and practice flights.
To transport him, he had to be hooded.
Dozens gathered at Carson Pass (el. 8,700') to witness the event.
If feistiness was any indicator of success, this guy was going to do great!
With strength and speed, the eagle flew.  His flight was long and spectacular, as if to say to LTWC, "You took great care of me.  Don't worry.  I'm going to be fine."  We stood and watched until we could no longer spy this majestic creature.  It was powerful, breathtaking and completely unforgettable.
Eagles: When they walk, they stumble.
They are not what one would call graceful.
They were not designed to walk.
They fly. And when they fly, oh, how they fly, so free, so graceful.
They see from the sky what we never see.”

Sunset Boat Ride...

Our friends, Bob and Jenny, live in the Tahoe Keys, right on the Lake.  After a scrumptious dinner, we headed out in her little pedal boat to see the sun set upon the water's edge.  Magical moments abound!

The Jackie Robinson Movie- 42

Belonging to a Movie Group has a similar benefit of membership in a Book Club, someone opens your eyes to a plethora of possibilities you might not have chosen for yourself.  This week's cinematic selection '42', the story of Jackie Robinson, was just such a benefit.

.
This is probably one of the best movies I have seen in a very, very long time.  It's an edge of your seat, tissue needing film about an ugly time in America, perseverance with grace and really great baseball... A Grand Slam and must see.

Fallen Leaf Lake and Beyond...

The promise of a 75° day made us want to be out in it all.  Bob and Jenny knew the perfect spot only a few miles from our homes.

Fallen Leaf Lake measures approximately 3 miles by 1 mile.  It was created by at least two glaciers which traveled northward down the Glen Alpine Valley.
This was the first of many waterfalls we meandered by.
This is Lily Lake, a small but photogenic lake literally cupped in the mountains.  It is hard to describe the beauty here.
A perfect picnic spot, with an unbelievable view.
Throughout our hike, we were escorted by this species of butterfly.  Our day was one of spectacular scenery and exceptional weather- an unforgettable sojourn into nature.  The photos do not do it justice.

Happy Birthday Kegan...

When Brenton was three, he started begging, "If you give me a little brother or sister, I promise I will never ask you to play with me again."  Here was our answer...

We're not quite sure how this little guy got to be our big 22 year old Kegan but we are so happy Brenton was so persistent!

4 Hours in Tahoe...

Through a series of communication errors, Annie, Robby and Stephanie arrived a day prior to when I thought they were, after touring San Francisco State, but we worked it all out and hit the ground...running.

After fueling up on a delicious lasagna lunch at home, we headed to Emerald Bay.  No trip is complete without a hike to the Lake's edge.  This was Steph's first Tahoe visit and I was going to make certain she saw as much as she could in four hours.
Rum Runners, at The Beacon in Historic Camp Richardson, were our rewards for the successful hike.
After dinner of 99¢ tacos at MontBleu, we strolled Stateline and ended at The Horizon.  Annie is a huge Elvis fan and since they all made a pilgrimage to Graceland last summer, I thought they should visit Tahoe's tribute to "The King".
The evening ended in pajamas playing Scrabble.  As you can see by my tiles, I did not win this round but it was an idyllic way to end the whirlwind adventure.  Tomorrow, they all head back to SoCal.  What a visit!

Opening Valhalla for the Season...

I awoke to a snow-covered Tahoe, the perfect day to spend indoors, cleaning!  Today's was the opening of Valhalla.  This home on the Lake, was built in 1924 in Romanesque style of log and shingle.  It is the location of festivals, art, music and film... all summer long.

Jenny and I systematically disassembled an overly cluttered tin-lined (thus mouse proof) closet and took all the unwanted items to The Attic for a donation.  Our only regret was we didn't take 'before and after' photos.  We did an amazing job.

Shutters were removed and put away, windows were cleaned, excitement for the upcoming season was elevated.  As a reward, the fireplace provided the ideal picnic spot.

Yesterday, I read in the glorious sunshine and while today was a reminder of winter, summer is on its way.  Valhalla and I are ready.

Final Birthday Celebration...

Ending my birthday celebration, with a flourish, was planned by our friends, Dick and Joan.  We drove through picturesque Hope Valley to dine at  Sorensen's Country Café.  Their classic beef burgundy stew is one of our culinary favorites.

We concluded our date back at our friends' home for pie and Scrabble.  Dick is not a big lover of games, so his willingness to play was a gift in itself.  I have the best friends... ever!

Winter Trek Volunteer Dinner...

The United States Forest Service gathered all its winter volunteers together for an appreciation dinner.  We were in the company of some pretty exceptional people.

I received the honor of having the most hours logged of any of the other Winter Trek volunteers.  I can't take full credit for this award, weather played a large part in many of the sessions being canceled.  Thursdays seemed to have the most consistant snowshoeing weather.  My shift was only called off once, making it easy to be there the most.
 "Those who can, do.
Those who can do more, volunteer."

Conversations with a Swimming Legend...

Our Lake Tahoe Historical Society is a perfect place for me, a history addict!  Each visit has me discovering something intriguing, endearing Tahoe to me even more.

I discovered a box full of memorabilia, donated by Erline ChristophersonOn July 25, 1962, this then 16-year-old from Lodi, CA, became the first female to swim the axis of the Lake. After failing on two previous attempts, the undaunted teenager completed a seventeen-mile swim from Baldwin Beach to Dollar Point, covering the distance in 13 hours and 17 minutes- a major accomplishment for a woman at the time.  I was told she returns to Tahoe every summer, so I found her phone number and called her.  My goal is to have Erline share this event with our community, for them to meet the woman who said, as a girl, "I've wanted to swim Lake Tahoe ever since I first saw it, -when I was eight or nine years old."  She made history and I'm eager to hear it.

A letter to my mom...

For my AAUW 'Talking on Paper' assignment, I thought I'd write about the woman who made my birthday month possible, my mom.

Mark Twain said, "When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty-one, I was astonished at how much he had learned in seven years."

Unfortunately for me, I didn't learn the same lesson about my mom until she had died.  I regret not being able to tell her how I felt about her.   After almost thirty years without her, this is what I long to say to her... this is what I learned.

1.  You were wise.   In high school, when I was dating a certain boy who had more looks than potential, you did not say, "Don't date him".  You simply said, "If you marry him, you will have to work very hard your entire life."  I knew, deep down, I was not a career woman and this really made me think about my choice.

2. You were fun.  When I came into the house, and you would be cleaning with Cha Cha music blaring in every room, I didn't realize, at the time, you were making it fun.  I can totally picture you, dancing with the vacuum.  I thought you were silly but you were making the best of the task at hand.

3.  You were strong.  You came from a very poor background and lost so many people, at such an early age.  Yet, you worked hard.  You made a family and a comfortable home for all of us.

4.  You loved unconditionally.  I know us kids were rough on you.  We did some incredibly stupid stuff but you still loved us and freely told us so.  Looking back, I don't know how you could, at various times, but you still did.

On the night that you died, I had called.  You had a clarity about you that you hadn't had in months.  You knew me.  You knew we were in the here and now.  You gave me the greatest gift that night.  You said to me, "I know this is the end and I accept it.  Don't worry.  I love you Denise."

It took me longer than seven years to realize how much you had learned Mom.  Thank you for the lessons you taught me.  I have learned so much from you and I miss you every moment of my life.  I'm who I am because of who you were.

Wine Tasting on the way home...

Just 55 miles from South Lake Tahoe, there exists hidden treasures... the Apple Hill® wineries.

Spend a day with us. Take your time. Breathe in the aromas of fine wines aging in casks, pies baking at roadside stands, and Christmas tree farms pruning and shaping for the holidays.

Apple Hill has always been a prime place for the bounty of agriculture. Its soil and climate are known to produce premium fruits, especially quality wine grapes. No wonder Apple Hill is home to pioneers and innovators of wine making in the Sierra Foothills.

You'll find family-run wineries working at their own pace, making small lots of wines from an intriguing diversity of grapes. A day spent among Apple Hill wineries is a day to discover.

We stopped just at Madroña Vineyards to taste and purchase a specific wine.  A idyllic way to end a weekend.  Salute!
