Lake Elsinore Storm Baseball!!!

Oh man, it has been a little over a decade since we stepped into the Lake Elsinore Diamond (Pete Lehr Field). With the stadium being only 19 miles away, I can't believe it has been ten years. WOW. This fun blog link will provide you with the flashback.

It had been even longer for our son so when I saw there was a game happening, while he was in town, he was totally up for it. For those who don't know, the Lake Elsinore Storm are a Minor League Baseball team of the California League and the Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. They have been playing here since 1994.
The stadium is small and welcoming. The entertainment provided is hysterical. While the players may not be ready for the 'big leagues' they sure did their best, most of the time (once the whole opposing team walked off the field thinking the Storm had three outs- they didn't... that was something we had never seen before).
For a Friday night, on a three-day weekend, attendance was surprisingly sparse yet the fans were enthusiastic.
And about the mascot, I found this from MascotHallofFame.com, "When it comes to fun in the Inland Valley, you have to mention Thunder The Dog. Thunder is the self-proclaimed California League Mascot of the Year, 19 seasons running. A very special hound, Thunder is one of only a few members of the Canis Thunderus family. He is known for his ability to stand upright, walk on the tops of chairs, dance, drive quads, and generally just act a fool. He first debuted as the primary mascot for the Storm in 2001, taking the place of former Storm mascot Hamlet. And has been a crowd favorite in Lake Elsinore ever since. One of his greatest achievements is spreading the word about staying positive everyday to youth with his message, 'Get your rest, then do your best and be positive, the Thunder Way!' With his book PAWSitivity With Thunder and the Storm Reading for Rewards program, he has been able to share the importance of keeping a Positive Attitude With a Smile with close to 55,000 children in 15 cities and 66 elementary schools this year alone." That's a pretty special mascot!

There's more to watch/see than just the game!

Unlike the last Storm vs Nuts game we attended (the Nuts beat the Storm 9-3), tonight our home team won (6-3)! What a night! Like the last Padres' Game we attended, I think Baseball Fever is spreading. We hope to attend more of both teams' games next year.
♪♫ "Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game." ♫♪

Our Baby's In Town

Wanting to visit his grandma and offer support to his Dad, our younger son flew into town (our older son was just here with his family). It was a day of connecting and acting like tourists.

San Diego's Terminal 1 has been under construction for what seems like forever. I do appreciate the levity the fencing provided.
We headed out for coffees at The Henry Coronado, which according to their website, "Beckons you in with a timeless, coastal vibe. The Henry blends Gatsby-era elegance and ocean side relaxation elevating your group dining."

As a way to stretch 'travel legs' we strolled one of the last neighborhoods created in the village of Coronado Island. The area of Glorietta Blvd was originally the site of a nine-hole golf course commissioned by Elisha Babcock and designed by golfer T.W. Tetley. After just three seasons, in 1900, a new golf course was developed across the boulevard (where we had lunch), and homes began to be constructed, with many of those historic homes still there today.

With limited time, we paused to admire this one. With a Neoclassical style, 600 Glorietta Blvd. stands out with its dramatic two-story porch and four Doric columns. Interesting to note is that this home has only been owned by two families since it was built in 1921. The house was started by E.I. Hill and then sold to Charles Amos, who completed it. His wife Doris is noted to be the first woman to surf in Coronado, and the duo were both accomplished violists. A major addition took place after it was sold in 1995, which greatly increased the footprint of the home, yet still it maintains its historic charm, with unique elements such as an original vegetable saver in the kitchen. We will return to this neighborhood for a longer explore, one day.

I've mentioned before that history was stamped on Coronado sidewalks. If one slows down, what one sees are the “marques" of the construction firms who laid the sidewalks in a town. Stamps in solid concrete tell us when and by whom they were laid. As we meandered, it was like a scavenger hunt of sorts. We discovered, underfoot, numerous permanent memories of those who came before us. J.W. Waller’s dated nameplate is the oldest one I found today. He is a local boy whose his hometown affiliation goes back to 1909. So cool.

Lunch was at the 'new' golf course on Glorietta Blvd. This is our favorite Coronado dining spot. It never disappoints.
Our last stop was Oceanside to show the changes this beach town has made and to peruse the Sunset Market.

Posing with the Top Gun house is a must for us fans.
A cool beer with a cool vibe was enjoyed at Stone Brewing Tap Room, too.

Basta is an Italian word that can be translated a few ways. I'm choosing to read this plate as O This will do! What a day.

LeucadiART Walk

LeucadiART Walk is the largest juried art show in North County and is a unique opportunity to support the community culture! Local residents and visitors from all over San Diego County were invited to stroll along the 101 and support fine artists, artisans, crafters and the Mainstreet businesses.

Hosted by the Leucadia 101 Mainstreet Association, this beloved one-day-only Annual Event features eight Artist Plazas along a one mile stretch of N. Coast Hwy. With approx. 100 participating fine artists, sculptors, potters, photographers, printmakers and handmade crafters, there was something for everyone to enjoy.
We arrived early for awesome parking and a delightful coffee break.

I was the first to sign up for the FREE paint class hosted by Paint and Party.
Donning a bright yellow apron, and sitting before any of the other kids joined the class, I was pretty giddy.

This was the creative rendition crafted by the little girl next to me. So dang cute.
Karissa Bordin, the owner and an artist, was so fun to work with. I love my family tree. Steve is a little concerned about where I plan to showcase it. Funny stuff.
There truly was something for everyone.
We fell in love with Larry Beard's photographs. Larry is not only a nice guy, he is an award-winning and National Geographic published photographer and is renowned for his large dramatic ocean scape wall pieces. Interesting to know, he often finds himself in harm's way when capturing his stunning imagery but that doesn't stop his lifelong passion for the ocean coming through and resonating in his beautiful art pieces. WOW.

Live music on almost every block made the day that much more festive.
This year, LeucadiART Walk was proud to feature local artist Mikey Kettinger's The Flowers Project ~ an interactive art exhibit which brought together the community and JOY by allowing all attendees to spread small acts of kindness throughout the day. We were all given a rose and asked to pass it onto someone we care about. At the end of the day, we delivered ours to Steve's Mom who in turned passed it on to her visiting granddaughter. I'd say that was a successful project of JOY.

Athletic non-alcoholic beer was there keeping people feeling festive without any negative side effects. Cool.
There were so many memorable things about this day. While summer may be waning, it seems its vibe is waxing in all these little quaint little beach towns we keep exploring. I 💙 Summer.

There's a New Cake Place in Town

Steve and I are spending a lot of time in Carlsbad and we were fortunate to be there for the arrival of the city's tasty new addition- SusieCakes. "Known for its delectable, homestyle baked goods, SusieCakes brings a taste of nostalgia and tradition to Carlsbad with its newest location."

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the founder, Susan Sarich. What a fun bio, "She grew up in Chicago, where she was called Susie by her two beloved grandmothers, Mildred and Madeline. Every day, Susie would come home from school to enjoy her grandmothers’ company over a glass of milk and a fresh baked treat. This daily baking ritual and special time together in the kitchen left a lasting impression. When Susie grew up to become Susan and moved to the West Coast, she brought along her grandmothers’ carefully recorded recipes on handwritten 3×5 cards. The pure and simple connection those recipes fostered helped Susan form SusieCakes bakeries to share her experience with others. Through SusieCakes, Susan honors Mildred and Madeline: both in her dedication to their baking traditions, and her commitment to providing women with progressive careers in the food & hospitality industry."

How could we resist this? "The grand opening celebration will take place on Aug. 24 from noon to 3 p.m. Highlights include samples of assorted baked goods, music, face painting, a balloon artist, a chance to win free cake for a year, a grab bag gift with every purchase, and more family-friendly activities. Additionally, the first 50 guests in line starting at 11 a.m. will receive a SusieCakes branded coffee mug (we were numbers 46 and 47)."
I don't know who the balloon artist was but she was incredible. The creations she made were like none I have ever seen before.

The bee was by favorite.

This video shows just what SusieCakes is all about. What a gal. What a company.
I love this... “You won’t find flashy trends and flavors at SusieCakes, and you won’t find artificial ingredients,” said founder and CEO, Susan Sarich. “You will find the best-tasting, timeless versions of the cakes and treats you grew up with. Our products have a genuine way of bringing people together." By the way, we took a chocolate cupcake, oozing with chocolate frosting, to Steve's Mom (who is an expert on all things dessert) and she absolutely loved it. What fun and yum!
