PANDA-monium at the San Diego Zoo

On the list of things I love, which admittedly is extensive, are pandas. Lori and I went to the Zoo with hopes of a glimpse our the newly arrived treasures from China.

China recalled almost all of its pandas who were on loan to zoos in the U.S. around five years ago after relations between the two countries soured. Cooperation between China and the U.S. has led to pandas returning to zoos and as of August 8th, two are on display here. Interestingly, the San Diego Zoo was the first zoo in the U.S. to have a cooperative panda conservation program.
Upon entering the Park we headed directly to view these black and white balls of fun. Not knowing how long the wait would be, we were beyond excited to see a very short line. The excitement exploded. "Welcome to Panda Ridge. Enter the fascinating world of giant pandas at the San Diego Zoo’s Panda Ridge. The newly refreshed and expanded area takes inspiration from the breathtaking, lush landscapes in and around giant pandas’ native habitats in Sichuan, Gansu, and Shaanxi provinces. You’ll be immersed in their diverse and dynamic landscapes while learning about the species’ conservation story."
"Giant pandas are beloved around the world and their conservation story is an inspiring example of strong partnerships and innovative strategies to protect the world’s natural heritage," the Governor Newsom stated when the new exhibit opened. "As the San Diego Zoo welcomes visitors to Panda Ridge, I encourage Californians to take this unique opportunity to appreciate one of the most iconic wildlife species and recognize the important partnerships at work to help them thrive for generations to come."
Meet the more fun to view of the two, Xin Bao, a 4-year-old female. Her name means "precious treasure of prosperity and abundance."

Yun Chuan, a 5-year-old male, is connected to the San Diego Zoo, prior to his arrival. In 2007, his mother, Zhen Zhen, was the fourth cub born at the zoo. His name is a nod to his grandmother, Bai Yun, who lived at the zoo for 23 years.

Has a t-shirt's slogan been more accurate?
The rest of the afternoon was spent just cruising around the zoo.

These guys are also on the previously mentioned extensive list!

Surprisingly, Lori and I committed to staying until the Park closed. "When the sun goes down, your wild adventure is only just beginning! The San Diego Zoo is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. all summer long, and a whole new world wakes up after dark during Nighttime Zoo. Join us for live music, spectacular entertainment, one-of-a-kind moments with your favorite wildlife, and more unforgettable fun that’s perfect for the whole family."

Our amazing day ended with the amazing Jambo Dunia! Live music, fanciful wildlife puppets, dancers, and acrobats make up this dazzling, interactive celebration of Africa’s savannas and all who share these vibrant ecosystems. Wow!

I was born literally across the street from the San Diego Zoo so any return here brings back a childhood nostalgia that revitalizes me. Share that with a dear friend and the success of panda viewing and I deem this day truly FANTASTIC!
