Meet Phil Rose (Vintage Designer)

Our community had a multi-family garage sale. As we strolled, I found a few treasures worth sharing. My favorite is this sleeveless sweater.

The label reads Phil Rose of California PANTSWEATER. So very vintage.
It also reads, "100% Wool. Made in British Crown Colony of Hong Kong".

New York's Seventh Avenue may be America's fashion capital, but California has always been the heart of the American sportswear industry. "The California pace is easy, outdoorsy, sunny," Vogue declared in 1954. "California clothes . . . suit it perfectly." Phil Rose of California was one of the many  garment companies based in the Golden State producing inexpensive, easy-to-wear clothes appropriate for active, informal lifestyles. The label became known for melding Italianate style–the "mod" look of the 1960s–with the casual California aesthetic.

Phil Rose's company was a sportswear maker, which really means they made separates.
His company was very popular, so much so it was used to advertise Crompton Fabrics, America's Oldest Textile Company.
Mr. Rose also wrote a book, 20 Years Less 8%, published by Los Angeles Fashion Press (1960). The description reads, "By the first man who dedicated himself exclusively to putting pants on women, when California textiles was an export business. Uncommon title, only one."
Not only did he create amazing fashion and write about it, he also sang about it. His LP was an album of song parodies about the women’s fashion business in 1964. Featuring new lyrics from Milt Larsen and Barbara Logan, and musical direction from Robin Frost (later known for his ragtime performances), the 12 songs on this “For Private Use Only, Not For Public Performance” LP lament Knock Offs, inspire dance with the Markdown Hoedown, and cause singing along to the Hymn to Women’s Wear Daily.

I still find it incredible that so much can be learned from something purchased at a thrift store/garage sale. This $2 sweater encouraged a deep dive to know more about Phil Rose of California. What a total blast. I can't wait for the perfect opportunity to wear my new PANTSWEATER top! Hysterical.
