A Return to the San Diego Zoo

Lori and I made a date to go to the zoo back in February. It has been 20 years since she has been. What fun to be able to take her there.

We began as all zoo days do, atop the Safari Tram. It is the best way to see the most animals.

We learned how important this animal is... the groundskeepers/gardeners were using GPS to document all the flora, much of it endangered. Pretty cool.
We spend a great deal of time ogling reptiles and amphibians. Fun.

These two lizards were 'tourists'. I love finding visitors to the zoo.

We meandered until we found ourselves visiting the African penguins in the spacious Cape Fynbos, which includes a cobblestone beach, nesting area, and rockwork that mimics the granite boulders found at Boulders Beach in South Africa—along with a 200,000-gallon pool with depths up to 13 feet, and underwater viewing.
The foliage here was exceptional.

The penguins were adorable though not swimming. The other residents in their tank were entertaining to watch.

A trip across the zoo on the Skyfari was so dang fun. It has been years for me.
There is something about being here that makes me feel like a kid again!

Our last stop was at the newest addition to the zoo. "Welcome to more than three acres of wildlife adventure, all with one amazing goal: to encourage Wildlife Explorers to learn about nature, actively play, encounter new species, and develop an empathy for wildlife."
"At the Denny Sanford Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, you can interact, climb, scramble, and jump in innovative nature play areas. Visit habitats from around the world, from desert dunes and wild woods to marsh meadows and rainforest. Learn by doing. And through a variety of one-of-a-kind experiences with animals, you’ll connect like never before to the natural world, and understand the importance of conserving wildlife." While we did not tour the inside exhibits, the outside was beyond fun.
This photo just seems to sum up the day!

The new area is loads of fun. You have to get there first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Did you check out any of the animal exhibits there?
Love this new area. It so well done, as are all of the new exhibits at both parks.
