The Beaches of Normandy in 2000...

For those who don't know, 20 years ago our family took an extraordinary journey through Europe. Our younger son was a WWII historian and the shores of Normandy were a must. I thought this was a throwback worthy of this Thursday.

Our first stop was at the gateway to the D-Day beaches, Bayeux's Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy, the only museum which presents all of the military operations which took place on Norman soil over the summer months of 1944.
After learning all we could absorb in the museum, we headed to the beaches.
The D-Day Landings, on 6 June 1944, were nothing less than the largest and most complex combined airborne and amphibious military operation of all time.
This epic history made us want see it for ourselves, to reflect on what was achieved – and why, and promise to return again. I hope we have that chance in the not too distant future.

“That road to V-E day was hard and long,
and travelled by weary and valiant men.
And history will always record where that road began.
It began here, with the first footprints of the beaches of Normandy.”
– President George W. Bush
