Some Good News: Firefighter Love...
This amazingly heartwarming story was shared with me by my friend, Karen, whose friends' son is a SoCal firefighter.
That son had been up north fighting fires (he started at the Creek Fire). After two and a half weeks, the team needed to come home for a break. Before they left the area, some benefactor paid for them to spend a night at The Fairmont in San Francisco (I count 22 heroes who had a night in luxury- wow). Not only is this hotel opulent, it is very historic, too. It was nearly completed before the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Although the structure survived, the interior was heavily damaged by fire, and opening was delayed until 1907. Architect and engineer Julia Morgan was hired to repair the building because of her then innovative use of reinforced concrete, which could produce buildings capable of withstanding earthquakes and other disasters.
Globally, it is important as well. In 1945, the Fairmont hosted international statesmen for meetings which culminated in the creation of the United Nations. Finessing of the United Nations Charter was conducted in the hotel's Garden Room. Who knew?
Whoever that benefactor was, he has not only a huge heart but exceptional taste, as well. Oh man, I'm getting teary. What a story.
