Whitehorse & Yukon Brewing...

For the next two nights, we'll be calling Whitehorse home (milepost 918).

This bustling town of 29,000 hardy souls is the capital, the largest, and the only city of The Yukon. Whitehorse's downtown sits on the shore of the Yukon River, which originates in British Columbia and meets the Bering Sea in Alaska. We can breathe easier here, as Whitehorse, according to Guinness World Records, is the city with the least air pollution in the world.
As I've mentioned before, my job, while Steve does ALL the driving, is to find the fun in our upcoming destination. Looking through one of the many tourist guides I gathered, I spotted this ad for Yukon Brewing whose motto is "Beer Worth Freezin' For". I called and booked us two spots for the 2 PM tour.
Yukon Brewing opened its doors in 1997.  Two Yukon babies, Alan and Bob, conceived their idea around a campfire on a canoe trip. From that inaugural conversation grew plans for a craft brewery that would service the north with quality beer while keeping jobs and money in the territory.
Two decades later Yukon Brewing, continues to work towards that goal. Employing a dozen or so staff (more in the busy summer months) and actively supporting countless local events and causes each year.
And they're clever. I love the names: Ice Fog, Grizzly, Longest Night, Lead Dog, Midnight Sun... all so clever indeed.

So the tour was pretty thorough. We got to explore the entire brewery while our guide explained the brewing, fermentation, filtering and packaging components of making their beer (it was complicated but interesting).
Afterward, we gathered and were able to sample all eight varieties that are Yukon Brewing's standard fare. What was super cool about it, besides the tour and tastings, is that they charged us each $10.00 but all proceeds – 100% of them – go to local fundraising events and charities. So it was fun, delicious and good for the community. Woo hoo.
Tomorrow, we will get out into the City and explore more. For now, this was a pretty sweet Day #1 in Whitehorse.

I sooooo want to go to this brewery!
I cannot wait to go to Alaska!
I say this as I type, looking out the window at the Atlantic ocean in the Canary Islands as the gentle breeze carries some of the curtains out the window...
Maybe I am travel spoiled. :)
