We're in ALASKA...

Since we were awakened at 4:30 AM with the bright sunlight, we broke camp and headed out. I apologize to all the other RVers with plans to sleep in.

We rumbled out to catch the George Black (free) ferry, to continue onto the Top of the World Highway.

I'm going to pretty much let the photos tell the story of this road with the "top of the world" views.

Oh yeah, we're in Alaska!

Yahoo! Our first moose!
"Top of the World" scenery was found around every corner.
Yep, you just have to get to Chicken.
In 1896, Bob Mathieson found a major gold prospect on Upper Chicken Creek, staked his claim and built a cabin. Chicken grew as a hub of activity for the southern portion of the Fortymile Mining District. Seven hundred miners were thought to be working the area between 1896 and 1898. And although many miners left during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898, Chicken remained a viable community. Currently there are about 200 residents, mainly for all the road work being done during the summer.
Lunch was chicken pot pie... what else? Local legend has it that Chicken received its name when a meeting of local miners could not agree on the spelling of Ptarmigan so they chose instead the local nickname for the bird, chicken.
The post office was established in 1903. So cute.
Tok is our home for our first night in Alaska. We are staying at the ÜBER fabulous Alaskan Stoves Campground. We love this place. Shelly knows her hospitality and has an attention to detail like no other. Wow.
So we are now, officially and finally, in the 49th state. Let the Alaskan Adventure begin!

Eating chicken in Chicken - so appropriate! Congrats on your moose encounter. BUT, you are going to need to find a way to sleep during the light or you're going to end up exhausted!!!

The animals look like they are posing for you.
I am sure after seeing your pictures all of the tired campers would forgive you. ;)
