Old Friend & Old Stomping Grounds

When heading south, I try to connect with Cindy, a friend since our youngest were in 2nd grade.

Having missed a turn to her home, I discovered this spectacular golf course, one she had never been to, that just called us to come and linger. It was the ideal place to spend hours catching up.

Later, we met Steve's friends in the Irvine/Tustin area, my home from 1970 until 1985. It's been forever since I have been back. The big shock was the huge development surrounding the local military base. I frequented this base a lot. I was a Navy kid, with privileges, and when I started driving gas was 45¢ a gallon there- the best deal in town.
This base was built in 1942.
It played a critical role in Navy and Marine aviation for over 50 years, first as an LTA (lighter-than-air) or blimp, airship base then as a helicopter facility and most recently as Marine Corps aviation’s principal helicopter facility in the Pacific region.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Tustin hangars are two of the largest wooden structures ever built, and contain the largest covered, unobstructed open space of any structures in the world. We were told they form their own weather pattern within. How odd that they will be surrounded with housing whose occupants will not know the history of these amazing buildings.
We are connecting with friends, seeing old sites with new eyes and enjoying our very busy SoCal sojourn. Each day is definitely different and interesting.
