Yorba Linda: Our First Home & Richard Nixon's Birthplace...
In 1987, we purchased our first home and moved away five years later. Today, we took a trip down memory lane and had a history lesson.
I scaled the backyard fence so I could photograph our first baby's footprints, permanently captured in the patio's cement.
Ian and Pat were our amazing neighbors and still live there. We enjoyed lunch and the opportunity to catch up, after way too long.
Besides being the location of our first home, Yorba Linda is the birthplace of our 37th President, Richard Nixon, who lived here from 1913 to 1922. The California Bungalow style residence was built by his father, Francis, on the family ranch. He built it from a catalog's mail order home building kit. We toured the home and really learned a lot about this interesting man's early life.
The museum, housed in a 52,000-square-foot building, offers a narrative of Nixon's life and career. It was extensive and quite impressive. My parents were huge Nixon supporters and after spending an afternoon, learning about him, I understand so much more.
This collection includes an assortment of bronze figures of world leaders who had important relations with Nixon. The leaders have been accurately recreated and are dressed in their actual clothing. I liked hanging with Churchill.
The U.S. government limousine, used by President Nixon throughout his presidency, is a cool customized 1969 Lincoln Continental.
The VH-3A "Sea King" helicopter was in the presidential fleet from 1961 to 1976, transporting Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford, and many foreign heads of state and government. We got to tour this craft and be truly in history. Wow. Really awe- inspiring.
Nixon said, "The greatest honor history can bestow is the title of peacemaker." After spending the day learning about our 37th President, I believe he was so much more than I ever knew and we both left feeling a new appreciation of his accomplishments... deserving the greatest honor. Rest in Peace Mr. President.
