Celebrating 12th Night...
Our friend, Catherine, invited us over to share her family's generations old tradition, 12th Night. The world history of it is very interesting, but Catherine's seemed extra special and poignant.
After drinking and dining together, Catherine stood and shared her childhood memories with us all. According to her grandmother, the Christmas tree, must be allowed to dry out completely. Then its branches are removed and broken into small pieces. Each person takes a part of the tree, makes a wish to benefit humanity, and then places the branch onto the fire. The large flame that bursts forth, not only evokes oohs and aahs from the group, according to tradition, and most importantly, it sends the wish out into the world.
I found this celebration to be a powerful end to the holiday season. Each guest wished for something for the greater good. Emotions were evident and everyone seemed at peace. Here's hoping that all we wished for comes true.
