Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care...

...for its Open House, the only day during the year that Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care invites the general public to tour its grounds. This was a wonderful opportunity to see wildlife and learn about the work done here.
What an opportunity for us to visit this special place.  "Let us not lose the pleasure of listening to songbirds, watching the flight of the wild geese, or having the ability to walk in the forest, knowing we are not alone" (in a good way).
According to www.ltwc.org, this Golden Eagle arrived with major blood loss from the wrist area of his left wing; how he was injured remains a mystery.
Steve and I think this is the first pair of ravens we have seen since moving here.
What is difficult to see here is this bobcat's ear is being actively licked by the bobcat on the left.  What fun it was to be able to watch this interaction.
This little gal was a delight to watch in the River Otter Rehab cage, which is a great environment for orphaned otters like this one to learn to swim and fish–skills that are vital to their survival. This otter will get a lot more practice here over the next couple of months before it is released back to the wild.
Another important aspect here is the nursery.  This is a three day old Douglas Squirrel.  He is being lovingly cared for.  The cutting of trees force infant birds and animals from their nests while  domestic pets rob nests and chase parents from their young.  LTWC cares for any and all orphans.  It is a pretty exceptional place.
Okay, so I complained about raccoons when one was bothering us at our cabin but this little guy won my heart.  There were 14 babies and they were so very precious I could have taken them home with me.
LTWC is committed to raising, rehabilitating and releasing orphaned and injured wildlife. LTWC has cared for almost 20,000 critters and have released almost 13,000 back to the wild, a 64% release rate, a statistic of which they, and the Community of Lake Tahoe, are very proud.
