Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance...

Knowing how much I love classic wooden boats, Steve took me north for the much anticipated 40th Anniversary of this exceptional Tahoe tradition!
Interestingly, most of the boats showcased in this year's event were Rivas, whose history dates back to 1842, when Pietro Riva began building boats in a small lake town in northern Italian.
Side note:  My truest love is Chris-Craft boats, the first of this type of wooden boat on Lake Tahoe. The company was started in 1922 in Michigan.
In the 1950s Pieto's grandson, Carlo, transformed the Riva business.  After a considerable struggle with his father to realize his ambitions, he created wooden boats of such exceptional style and elegance that they surpassed anything his competitors produced.  In due course the Riva brand became a worldwide legend and in the 70s, they arrived here in Tahoe.
You have to love an event that has a photo booth and I have to love my husband who will join me in one!
I was delighted with the Italian names give to these boats.  "La Dolce Riva"... the sweet Riva, indeed!
America’s most recognizable—and possibly most valuable—wooden speedboat is the venerable Thunderbird yacht which has transported guests in opulent luxury between high-mountain estates and luxury resorts for decades.
Being able to be this close and really study this fantastic yacht was a highlight!
John L. Hacker designed Thunderbird for George Whittell, Jr., who requested a yacht that reflected his love of Duesenberg autos and DC-2 aircraft. Fashioned of double-planked mahogany and brushed stainless steel and launched in 1939, this is a sight to see!  Wow.
There is absolutely no way to accurately capture this day.  The photos do not do it justice.  These boats, with the backdrop of Lake Tahoe, are breathtaking and to meander through the docks, gleaning just a hint of this kind of life, was beyond exceptional.  This was truly a day well spent.  Until next year, Arrivederci.
