Bijou Pines in South Lake Tahoe lots for sale $250 (in 1929)...

The housing tract we live in is deemed historic.  The lots were laid out in September of 1929.  A month later the Stock Market crashed.  Sales declined drastically.  Our neighbor, Jack, shared with us the original sales brochure for Bijou Pines.  His father bought the lot next door as a wedding gift to his wife in 1932.  I have not been able to find any information about this historic area so I wanted to share it here, verbatim, from the original paperwork.  The cabin pictured is across the street from us on lot #1 (ours is the last lot #254).

BIJOU PINES is located at Bijou, under the lofty heights of Freels Peak, the highest mountain in the Tahoe region.  From Bijou, a magnificent panorama of Mt. Tallac, Rubicon and other high peaks in the Tahoe Sierra loom on the horizon with Lake Tahoe in the foreground.  BIJOU PINES is in the heart of gorgeous lake and mountain scenery, where hunting and fishing vie with the delights of hiking or riding over many miles of mountain trails to Freels Peak, Star Lake, Mt. Tallac, Genoa Peak, Marlette Lake and many other interesting places.
The many excellent automobile roads from BIJOU PINES afford delightful trips to Glenbrook, Carson City, Virginia City, Fallen Leaf Lake, Echo Lake, Glen Alpine, Desolation Valley, Emerald Bay and many other points of interest.  An automobile road now circles the entire lake, many miles of which are paved. Many interesting points on the shores of Lake Tahoe may be visited in afternoon's ride around the lake in your auto.
The long, white sandy beach and gradual depth of water at Bijou affords safety to the complete enjoyment of swimming in the clear, sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe.  The days are warm and balmy, while the nights are cool.  Daily average noon temperature 72 degrees.
A general store in the village of Bijou furnishes supplies of all kinds at reasonable prices.  Milk, eggs, butter and vegetables are brought in daily from nearby mountain ranches.
A golf course adjacent to BIJOU PINES is open to the pubic.  Evenings may be enjoyed at dancing in the nearby hotels at Bijou.
There are no rattlesnakes, poison oak or poison ivy in the Tahoe region.
Bring your children to your own cabin site for the summer in the Great Tahoe out-of-doors, where they learn every flower, every tree, every rock, every mountain peak, every stream and every clod has a story to tell of a great orderly universe; where they learn "big muscle activities" which lay the foundation for a vigorous adult life' where they learn to be dependent for their amusements on themselves, where the parent does not hear the youngster's continual plea "What can I do next?"  There is always something to do that will give your children an experience which will bring them rich rewards in health, happiness and character building.
Farsighted parents realize that modern life in the city cannot supply the activities in the summertime which will keep the youngsters happy and contented; the natural instinct of the child crave something new and attractive to employ their pentup and surplus energy.  Nature's towering pines, firs and cedars, lofty mountain peaks, streams and abundant lakes at Tahoe inspire the youth to develop qualities of endurance, self-confidence and character.
BIJOU PINES is Tahoe's newest sub-division and affords you the opportunity to procure a large mountain cabin site at the price of $250.00 with free artesian well water supplied under pressure to every lot.  You may purchase on liberal easy terms.  See reverse side of folder for map of BIJOU PINES and size of lots.
For a limited period all lots in BIJOU PINES will be priced at $250.00 each per 50' X 100' lot.  Terms $25 per year, interest deferred payments.  Plans for cottages free.  Prices after July 1st, 1934 are subject to change without notice.  For further information address W.F. Ham, Bijou, Lake Tahoe or W.S. Bliss, San Francisco.

What a great piece of Tahoe history! AND what an amazing deal. I wish houses in California were more affordable these days. BUT I love where we live so renting is okay by me!
