On to Avignon...

When we were here in 2000, we spent only a day in Avignon but it must have had an impact because we have returned. This time via the TGV high speed train.

Avignon, a city which is called France’s Gateway to Provence, is set on the Rhône River. From 1309 to 1377, it was the seat of the Catholic popes. It remained under papal rule until becoming part of France in 1791. This legacy can be seen in the massive Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace , below, will be the subject of many posts, no doubt) in the city center, which is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts. We are staying very close to this historical, massive monument. What fun.

Of all the places we have stayed in my life, I think this Au pied du palais avec terrase apartment might just be my favorite. It had a WOW factor instantly. It is a true 'pinch me' moment being here.

This is the door which leads to our terrace. So spectacular. What a décoré.

After everyone checked in at their respective 'homes', we headed for groceries in order to have our first meal in Avignon on our terrace.

This apartment is just ideal for entertaining! Our hosts, Guy and Valerie, have thought of everything.

What more can I say? Ceci est incroyable!
