Legally Blonde: The Musical

When Erin and I attended the Spanish Brass Concert in the Old Town Temecula Community Theater in January, we discovered that Legally Blonde: The Musical was going to be performed on Day #10 of my Birthday Month. Thinking that it would be a fabulous way to spend a Sunday afternoon, we went to the box office during the concert's intermission and bought tickets. Two months later, we donned pink and headed back to Old Town.

Based on the novel and the hit movie of the same name, this fun theatrical romp chronicles the journey of the famously perky Elle Woods, a fashion-savvy, UCLA sorority girl who finds her life turned upside down when she is dumped by her boyfriend, Warner. In an effort to prove to Warner that she is more than just some blonde sorority girl, she follows him to Harvard Law, where she struggles to fit in and do well. Ultimately, she defies expectations and manages to stay true to her delightfully pink personality. What's not to love?
There was a five minute rough start (the sound system was screechy) but once the production got on a roll, it was thoroughly enjoyable. With laughs and a little tearing up, we were very satisfied theatergoers.
The entire cast was stellar with a few personal favorites. David O'Connell as Kyle the UPS guy still has me laughing out loud. And oh my gosh, Mehel DuBois, as Brooke Wyndham, impressed as she vigorously jumped rope while singing. Wow.

Though my highest accolades go out to Krista McClean who starred in the title role as Elle.
She was called upon, as the understudy, at the 11th hour and she really did fantastic. I was so thoroughly impressed and I was happy I had the opportunity after the show to tell her so. I'm a huge fan now.
Erin and Bruiser got to have a moment, too. What a total blast.
Our outing was made complete by dining al fresco at the Blackbird Tavern. After dinner at home, since Erin was spending the night, we got into our pajamas and watched Saturday Night Fever. It had been years since any of us had seen this 1977 film showcasing the music of the Bee Gees (which was the draw). While the movie was probably not our best choice after such an uplifting afternoon, it combined with all the day's components to make it magical. Life is good and I'm a very happy almost birthday girl.

It's... a... musical
A musical
And nothing's as amazing as a Musical
With song and dance
And sweet romance
And happy endings happening
By happenstance
