Our Friday Night in Two Parts

For those who know us, we're not out on the town people but tonight was a unique exception.

After an early dinner with Lynne and Scott, we headed out for our very first Temecula Art Night, the award-winning monthly event which "provides art, entertainment, and culturally enriching experiences in the heart of Old Town Temecula."
This free event, in the historic Merc (1890), offers an exciting opportunity for varied artists to share their work with the community and the many visitors to Temecula. If I was a tourist in town, this is exactly the type of event I'd look for. Wow.
We were extra excited for today's fête because we know the 'talent', Bonnie Martland. Bonnie is a local artist, former teacher, and veteran who has shared so much of her talents with the art community here. We know her from our sons' years at Margarita Middle School (2001-2005). She was the incredibly gifted artistic director of the 8th grade dances and I was fortunate to see her in action many, many times.
From her artist statement we learn, "This exhibit title, Petal Pushers, is a play on words that captures, in a round about way, the conceptualization of the paintings in this collection. The older I get the more experimental I have become and the more interested in trying out new subjects to paint, and/or new ways to paint things I have traditionally done. Petals refers to the floral subject matter of the paintings; and Pushers reflects the idea of pushing myself to be free, and experimental, in my methods. In creating these paintings, I wanted to play and have fun with the paint and the subject matter. The Impressionist painters served as inspiration in that, rather than creating photo-realistic images, they aimed at capturing the impression of what they saw, and used color and design in fresh, non-traditional, ways."

I loved how Bonnie used color and design in fresh, non-traditional, ways!

Her multi-media artworks feature colorful floral still life paintings and really need to be seen up close to appreciate all the details. For your opportunity, this exhibition will be on display until February 25.
Bonnie's artwork impressed our eyes while Fast Heart Mart delighted our sense of sound with his amazing banjo playing and wonderful storytelling. What an interesting guy. We'll try to find him playing elsewhere to enjoy him more thoroughly.

Man, this town is hopping! I'm so loving Temecula right now.
