New Town, Old Cars, & Foliage!
Historically, I love full days... ones that begin early and end late. If one is going to do something one might as well do everything! Thankfully, Lori and I share that love.
Wanting to introduce me to a new breakfast spot, we headed to the village of Rancho Santa Fe.Thyme in the Ranch will be a place I return to. Who can beat the porch dining it offered?
According to this California Historical Landmark #982 plaque, "Rancho Santa Fe began as Rancho San Dieguito, a land grant of nearly 9,000 acres made to Juan María Osuna in 1845. The Santa Fe Railway Company later used the land to plant thousands of eucalyptus trees for use as railroad ties. In the 1920s Rancho Santa Fe became one of the state's first planned communities unified by a single architectural theme, the Spanish Colonial Revival. Lilian Rice, one of California's first successful women architects, supervised the development and designed many of the buildings." I have been through this town numerous times and have never stopped to explore. Wow.
As luck would have it, all the cool cars were strutting their stuff.
I had absolutely no idea what this beast was. Steve informed me that it is a Tesla Cybertruck. That Elon!
“The car is the closest thing we will ever create
to something that is alive.”
– Sir William Lyons
Our ultimate goal was to use our San Diego Museum Month Museum Pass. More than 60 museums and cultural institutions are participating in the 35th annual Museum Month from Feb. 1 to Feb. 29. The event offers 50% admission. I don't know how many I'll be able to get to but the San Diego Botanic Gardens is a fantastic. start. The San Diego Botanic Garden 37-acre urban oasis features 4 miles of meandering trails and ocean views, 5,000+ plant species and varieties, and 29 uniquely themed gardens that represent 15 different regions and many habitats of the world. This natural wonderland is designed for children and adults, alike; "explore your interests, learn about the plant world that surrounds us, and let nature fill you with a little wonder."
I'm going to let the photos tell the story of our visit. Gorgeousness abounds!
"A flower does not think
of competing with the flower next to it.
It just blooms."
-Zen Shin
I think this photo of a bee in flight is my favorite of the day!
"Flowers always make people better,
happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine,
food and medicine for the soul."
-Luther Burbank
"The butterfly is a flying flower,
the flower a tethered butterfly."
-Écouchard Lebrun
Can you see the hummingbird hidden in this flower? What an incredible immersion in nature. It did us both good! Walter Hagen said it quite nicely, “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be sure to smell the flowers along the way.”
Wanting to dine by the sea, we headed to the Encinitas Café for a delightful alfresco dinner experience. We then strolled to the shore and saw this beached whale from the beach overlook. Wow. "A dead whale washed up on shore south of D Street. It appears that the juvenile whale has been dead in the water for some time."A team of lifeguards were working on the shore to secure a rope on the whale. This boat was then going to tow it back to the sea. Rumor has it that this has been done weeks ago and the whale returned. The entire process was mesmerizing to watch. Lori and I stood there until we were just too cold. I wonder how they will permanently fix this issue. Wild stuff in Encinitas.
“My soul is full of longing
for the secret of the sea,
and the heart of the great ocean
sends a thrilling pulse through me.”
― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
