The King Tide @ Low Tide

So what is a all the tide talk about? The King Tide is a common — non-scientific — way to refer to the biggest tides of the year. This means that during a king tide, we'll see the highest high tide and the lowest low tide of the year.

What causes a king tide? This very cool phenomenon occurs when the sun and moon are both at their closest to Earth — pulling on the ocean with their strongest gravitational force. A king tide’s scientific name is perigean spring tide, perigean meaning that the moon is closest to the earth, and spring referring to a full or new moon. I never knew! I love that after 60 years on the planet, I'm still learning.

We chose to experience the King Tide at our favorite local spot- Cerezo Bluffs Tide Pools. And boy was the tide OUT. I don't think I have ever experienced anything quite like it.

The afternoon was made most fun by Brady's presence. She is relentless (and successful) in her search for creatures in the sea!
Kelp crabs, sea slugs, brittle stars, shrimp of various sizes, sea hares, tons of hermit crabs, and one awesome octopus were the treasures she discovered!

Brittle stars are the most amazing creatures but they are indeed brittle, losing limbs if one is not gentle. This big guy must have been pretty protected with all of his appendages still intact.

This was my first octopus sighting and I was beyond thrilled!

The photos can't capture the tide or the number of people joining us on our sea quest. It was incredibly thrilling especially with Brady there as our marine guide.
“Because there's nothing more beautiful
than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline,
no matter how many times it's sent away."
