Vail Ranch... Volunteering in History

Wanting to be a part of the historical side of this historical town, I volunteered at the Vail Headquarters to help with a student tour of 5th graders.

So what is the Vail Ranch? In 1905, Arizona cattle baron, Walter Vail, purchased four Ranchos totaling 87,500 acres. The area Vail selected to headquarter his operations has a history dating back to 1844. Something a 5th grader here should know.

I had the opportunity to lead ten lessons on early 1900 clothes laundering. Oh man, by group #4(or so) I was on fire!
The students were put through the wringer. Okay, not really but they got to wash clothes the old-fashioned way and learned just where that idiom came from. This was an exceptional group of students. Each eager to learn and to share what they had learned at other stations.
For many, this was the first time they had seen a wooden clothes pin and a clothes line for that matter. I absolutely loved this morning of teaching and learning.
Afterward, I had the chance to wander around a few of the other 'lesson' locations like this very cool Chuck Wagon. I still have much to learn. Oh what fun it is.
