Camp Sunrise- Day 1...

Having known about this grief camp for children, I was every excited for my three days of helping.  I had no true idea of the impact this experience would have on me, on all of us.

Part of the success of this camp is its location.  Camp Galilee Episcopal Camp & Conference Center, nestled in the pines on the shore of Lake Tahoe, makes one feel better just by being there.
I would write about every meal, due to the deliciousness of each and everyone.  This was not "camp food'.  This was 5 star, and it was scrumptious. Their food philosophy- In a world where meals have become increasingly rushed and ready-made, Galilee considers meals an opportunity to be intentional about our health, wellness, and our impact on the environment. Home-cooked meals made with care and quality ingredients taste better, are more nutritious and are more fulfilling to prepare. We aim to create exciting meals that nourish our guests, encourage them to expand their palates, and promote an enjoyable dining experience through sharing it with others.
Our first night was spent getting to know one another.  Dessert of s'mores around the campfire made it a true camping experience.
Our first afternoon together was one of excitement, reunions, discovery, and promise.  I can't wait for tomorrow.

One of our favorite spots...

Paul Coelho said, "The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them."

Today, after volunteering at Vikingsholm, we hung out on the deck of Bob and Jenny's home.  It was simple and fun... just passing the time with friends.  We must be very wise, indeed.

Rubicon Trail & Volunteering..

Since our guys were busy, Jenny and I decided to hike a bit of the D.L. Bliss Rubicon Trail, "a delightful easy hike that includes level walking, stunning views, and quiet forests along the way".  The day was an ideal one for exploring the shoreline while getting a bit of exercise.

Afterward, we completed our first ADA accessibility escort volunteering, of the summer, by helping a family of six experience Emerald Bay in all its glory.

The End to the Faire...Huzzah!

With cooler temperatures and a seemingly more festive vibe, the Valhalla Faire concluded today with much pomp and circumstance... and a great deal of photo opportunities!

It is always interesting to watch the Queen's procession and have her entire entourage yell "Three Cheers for the Ale Master" (us in our beer booth).
Cleavage is a big part of the Faire and there was an abundance today!
Valhalla is a hall in which heroes killed in battle were believed to feast with Odin for eternity so what better costume than that of a Viking?
Just some of the diseases that were going around!!!
I took time to watch a couple of shows, which is always entertaining.
With the piece de resistance being the Codpiece competition.
This "caveman's" um equipment, had the crowd laughing and the judges inspecting.
My favorite was this "dragon" who, as the lord moved his hand in an in and out motion, caused the codpiece to spew bubbles.  Parents were forewarned that this wasn't for children.  It truly was the ideal way to end my time at the Faire.  I laughed most of the way out.
"Before ye judge a man, ye should walk a mile in 'is boots.
That way, if he goes for 'is sword, ye be a mile away...
and ye 'ave 'is boots."

Casey's Birthday Bash

We went to a new (to us) Mexican restaurant, aptly named Margarita's, for our neighbor's birthday bash.  We met new friends, dined on really great food, and had a riotously fun time- all before 8:30 PM.  We're a wild bunch.

Day #1 at the Renaissance Faire...

Hail and well met!  I am very fortunate to be a serving wench at Tahoe Tallac Association's beer booth at the Valhalla Renaissance Faire.  This year, we were encouraged to dress more authentic and be more in character.  I was game... Steve not so much.

So on one of the hottest days so far in South Lake Tahoe, I entered this rather unique world and had a total blast.  The people who attend and work at the Faire really do make it an unforgettable experience.  I eagerly await thee morrow!

Upside-Down House...Lee Vining

We've decided that each time we traverse the highway, between north and south, we're going to stop at one or two sites along the way.  Today's explore was a recommendation by my friend, Bill's, granddaughter.

Lee Vining (founded in 1852) is one of those places we have merely driven through.  Our destination was The Upside-Down House, Mono County's first "man-made" tourist attraction (1956). This unique dwelling was created by Nellie Bly O'Bryan (1893–1984), an actress, the first female licensed projectionist and hunting guide, visionary, entrepreneur, and long time resident of the Mono Basin.  Her creation was inspired by two children's stories—Upside Down Land and The Upsidedownians.  If you were a fan of Huell Howser, this house was profiled in
his California's Gold series titled - PLACES I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO GO.

The Old School House Museum was one of those unique locations where one could get lost in 'eclecticness'.  Rich in historical items and an oddity or two, we enjoyed learning of this area's past told by the docent.  Its location, overlooking Mono Lake, made this informative detour quite delightful.

It's the way you ride the trail that counts.

Sister-in-law's Birthday Luncheon...

Our sister-in-law wanted to celebrate her birthday with us at the folks' new place.  Yesterday we dined overlooking the driving range on a spectacular June day.

A birthday is just the first day
of another 365-day journey around the sun.
Enjoy the trip.
