Flashback Friday: Christmas 1965
When David Woodruff shared the history of the Fruitcake, he also spoke of the tradition of the Mall Santa. A surprisingly detailed history can be found here. This photo, circa 1965, is the only photo I have of me and Santa Claus. Visiting Santa in a store window began in the late 19th century when retailers like James Edgar in Massachusetts (1890) and Macy's (1860s) started featuring him to draw crowds, evolving from simple appearances to elaborate displays with animated scenes. Photo opportunities began by the early 20th century, becoming a beloved holiday tradition to sell goods and create festive experiences.
How cool is this photo, a true capture of the era. The reflection of cars on the street firmly place this image in the early 1960s.
"An ounce of goodness everyday,
Can soothe the heart in many ways,
An ounce of goodness 'just because'
Don't wait until Christmas to be Santa Claus."
