Books. Salmon. Snow.

What a diverse Saturday we had! It began with me volunteering for the Friends of the Library Book Sale.

It has been a few years since I've had the opportunity to spend the morning in the company of some pretty amazing women. Greeting the customers and seeing the joy on their faces when they leave with their literary treasures makes my heart happy.

I received a message from Melissa, the book sale coordinator, which read, "It’s always great to see you, Denise! Thank you for your help today. The sale was one of the most successful in recent years!" Yes, a happy heart, indeed.

Our next stop was at Taylor Creek. This popular spot for viewing fall colors and wildlife provides important habitat for a wide variety of birds, mammals, amphibians and fish.

The beaver inhabitants have been busy this year!

We were really here for the salmon. While most native fish such as the Lahontan cutthroat trout spawn in the spring, the non-native Kokanee salmon spawn in the fall and early winter. These land-locked relatives of the Sockeye salmon typically travel upstream from mid- to late October into November.
While their numbers were not as plentiful in years past, we were delighted to see flashes of their beautiful hues in the strong current of the river.
In addition, it was just wonderful to be out in it all. As John Muir so aptly said, "And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul."

We concluded our busy day at South Lake Brewing Company for its annual Pray for Snow Film Festival & Fundraiser.

And what a worthy cause. Since 1993, SOS Outreach has cultivated a deep sense of belonging in kids and teenagers, helping them discover their future potential and impact on our world. It engages over 300 youth from El Dorado and Douglas counties while operating programs at Heavenly and Kirkwood. How cool is that?!

The evening was one of like-minded snow enthusiasts supporting a worthy cause while watching ski and snowboard films, buying numerous tickets for an amazing raffle offering gear and prizes, and just enjoying the promise of Winter. It was rather addictive. Steve was ready to dust off his skis! Great day all around. Wow.
