Spectators at an Amazing Bike Race
The Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec consists of 18 World Teams, made up of the greatest riders on the planet. "This sporting spectacle of the highest level took place in the heart of the Old Capital, an exceptional site for holding this event thanks to its tailor-made relief and its undeniable charm. A unique opportunity to see the world cycling elite in action in a very festive and welcoming atmosphere!"
This is a very difficult course. It is described as, "Being particularly suitable for punchers and those accustomed to steep slopes." It is one urban circuit, 16 laps (7.8 miles per lap), 125.26 miles total with an overall elevation gain of 9,763'. It is grueling to ride yet incredible to watch.
We spent the day meandering through town and watching these athletes in some of our favorite locations. What a truly amazing way to spend a Friday.
These four riders led the way for the entirety of the competition.
I hope the photos help to showcase the race and Old Québec.
At times it was up close and personal.
Who won, you might ask? The Belgian Arnaud De Lie, a 21-year-old hopeful won by taking advantage of his burst of speed to achieve his very first World Tour success. "The rider from the Lotto Dstny team produced an incredible sprint coming back from afar. He beat the New Zealander Corbin Strong (Israel-Premier Tech) and the Australian Michael Matthews (Jayco AlUla)."
Steve captured the excitement of the day in this brief video. When we planned our dates for this sojourn in Québec, we did it unknowing about all of the events we have fortunately found. We are truly happy travelers... and we're not done discovering.
