Camping on the Sand Dunes

Steve has been wanting to drive onto a beach to be able to show off his rig and camp amongst the sand dunes.

One of several off-highway vehicle (OHV) areas administered by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) offers visitors recreational activities such as swimming, surfing, surf fishing, camping and hiking.

Steve did his research. The only way not to get stuck in the fine sand was to deflate the tires. He was happily prepared.
After the Europeans arrived and displaced the Chumash, the dunes became a playground for the new residents of California. It was one of the very few places where the beach was flat and hard enough to get a horse and buggy along the seashore. In 1905, people really began to make changes to Pismo and Oceano Beaches with the use of internal combustion vehicles to get down the beach and around the dunes. Tourism grew and the rest is history.

That's not to say that normal beach activities don't happen, too. Steve and I delighted in beachcombing.

I have to admit I found it a tad surreal to hear mothers say to their young children, "Watch for cars!" while playing on the seashore. Wild.
We camped at the area closest to the protected shoreline. This was the view from our campsite. And while the noise of ATVs and heavy vehicles stuck in the soft sand disrupted the sounds of lapping waves, we'd return to this special place another time (maybe not on a sold out three-day weekend, however).

Wow. That beach is so active! Great to see so much sand, however. We swam last night near our house and the tide runs so high these days. Love your camping spot.
