California Welcome Center in O'side

On our way through Oceanside, we decided to check out the new and improved California Welcome Center.

This cool space receives more than 60,000 visitors each year and is staffed by a helpful group of volunteers. Every time we've been there, we've been greeted by friendly staff who were eager to provide helpful information and tips for exploring Oceanside and the greater San Diego County (it also has a fun, coastal-inspired boutique section, with local gifts and souvenirs).

I really loved the museum quality exhibition, The History of Skateboarding. This small space showcases the progression of skating over the years through changing board styles. "The evolution of the skateboard includes changes in wheels, trucks, bearings and decks. Wheels went from metal to clay to urethane. Trucks went from narrow roller skate to wider and stronger. Bearings went from loose to precision. Decks went from 2x4s to fiberglass to 7-ply maple laminations." Who knew?
The display even includes boards from legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk and his professional skateboarder son, Riley. For those who don't know, Tony Hawk was nine years old when his older brother changed his life by giving him a blue fiberglass Bahne skateboard. By 14, he’d turned pro, and by 16 was considered the best competitive skateboarder on earth. A World Champion for 12 years in a row, he continues to skate demos and exhibitions internationally, and remains the most recognized action-sports figure in the world. Totally cool stuff.
Oh and you know it's a good day when you find a 1977 Volkswagen Bug available for a photo-op (though my paparazzo was in the car on a phone call). I loved this detour from our normal path to somewhere.

I forgot you haven't been since the remodel. It is so neat now. I will be on the lookout for more cool things to do in Oceanside!
