Waves & Art...

We began our day on the pier for the 43rd annual Oceanside World Bodysurfing Contest. This event is considered the premier Bodysurfing contest in the US. Approximately 350-400 bodysurfers from around the world competed in their respective age divisions for trophies and prizes.

We were briefly in Oceanside to visit Eric and Brady and their suggestion of heading to the beach for this event was enthusiastically accepted!
For those who don't know, bodysurfing is the art and sport of riding a wave without the assistance of any buoyant device such as a surfboard or bodyboard.
So how are the competitors judged? "The bodysurfer should, as far as possible, propel him/herself along the ‘unbroken’ section of the wave. For the purpose of judging, any maneuvers will be taken into account when scoring a bodysurfer’s action while riding a wave."
The criteria of judgement are as follows-
The bodysurfer must:
  • Choose the biggest and/or best waves;
  • Ride for the longest functional distance in the most critical section of the wave;
  • Ride with the maximum speed, glide and flow;
  • Perform maneuvers with control and power.

The bodysurfer who performs this to the highest degree of difficulty with the most style, flow and grace will receive the highest score for a ride. This was the perfect day to watch these athletes and learn something new!
We then went back to my favorite little art spot, the William D. Cannon Art Gallery for its current exhibit of Light and Space: Contemporary Continuations.
Inspired by the 1960's Southern California Light and Space movement, this local group exhibition presents contemporary artists who have continued working within the core fundamentals of the original movement.
Related to minimalism and geometric abstraction, the work is characterized by its focus on visual perception through light, space, and volume. Inspired by these foundational elements, each artist has expressed an evolved individual interpretation in a variety of mediums.
Marc Chagall said, "Great art picks up where nature ends." I say great are the days which are filled with nature and art!
