Million Dollar Quartet at Sand Harbor
When we traveled cross-country, Memphis was high on our must visit list and Sun Studio was #2 (after Graceland).
Here, on December 4, 1956, Elvis Presley dropped in to Sun Studio to visit owner, Sam Phillips while Carl Perkins was in the studio cutting new tracks, with Jerry Lee Lewis backing him on piano. Johnny Cash was also in the studio, and the four started an impromptu jam session. Phillips left the tapes running and the recordings, almost half of which were gospel songs, survived. They have since been released under the title Million Dollar Quartet.
Wanting to give Cindy the most unique first visit to Lake Tahoe, we secured tickets to this Tony-Winning Rock & Roll Tribute, performed in the magical venue of Sand Harbor Amphitheater.
We arrived early to picnic on the lakeshore. The vegan menu was meatloaf, new potatoes and steamed broccoli... YUM.
This production was absolutely AMAZING. The premise is a fictional rendition of this exceptional day in music history. The songs performed were not only some of our favorites (Walk the Line, Great Balls of Fire, Blue Suede Shoes) but these actors were some of the most talented we have ever seen!
What a setting! Truly magical.
If you are anywhere near Lake Tahoe this summer, this event should be on your itinerary.
