Science & Seashores...

The Seymour Marine Discover Center is a must!

Where else could we touch a friendly shark, see how marine scientists work, and take in the spectacular Monterey Bay?

The creatures in the Center's aquarium inspire the scientist in all of us. At the invertebrate pool we touched sea stars, sea urchins, hermit crabs, sea anemones and more.

The various tanks housed rockfish, eels, decorator crabs and jellies.
We all laughed at the decorator crab, a species that uses materials from their environment to hide from, or ward off, predators. They decorate themselves by sticking mostly sedentary animals and plants to their bodies as camouflage. This poor guy was given pompoms to use. Funny stuff.

The exhibits outside the museum were just as impressive. This gray whale skeleton comes from an animal that was stranded in south San Francisco Bay in 1990.
Ms. Blue is an 87-foot blue whale skeleton and one of the largest skeletons of any kind, displayed any where in the world.

We headed to the wharf to spend some time on the seashore.
What fun to see even more of the residents who reside in Monterey Bay.

The decorator crab is so funny. It's been years since we were there...always a favorite with the kids. Tide pools at Natural Arch was another favorite. Lots to do in Santa Cruz. You've inspired me ~ we need to plan a trip there! Your cute egret with black legs and yellow feet is a Snowy Egret.
