Bars, Barrios, and Berkeley...

...The Transformational Power of Language. Karen and I were intrigued by the title of this talk at Sierra College, so off to Truckee we went.

Truckee High School English teacher Craig Rowe, Ph.D. explored the empowering possibilities of personal narrative through an examination of poetry, memoir, and artistic activism. We learned about poet Jimmy Santiago Baca and heard some of his work read aloud. We also learned of inventive community narrative interventions such as the Medea Project: Theatre for Incarcerated Women. (It is good to learn something new everyday).
Dr. Rowe shared with us his life, which could have gone disastrously wrong, but through events that were based on language (helping at an ESL lab, discovering Slam Poetry, etc), he found his passion and through this evening, shared that passion with us all. It was an inspiring and educational 'walk in his shoes'.

"Literacy is freedom,
and everyone has something significant to say."
-Jimmy Santiago Baca
