More Memory Making with Erline

First off, I have to introduce new readers to Erline Christopherson Phillips. In 2013, while volunteering at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society, I discovered a box full of memorabilia donated by Erline. In July 1962, this then 16-year-old from Lodi, CA, became the first female (and only second person) to swim the length of the Lake. After failing on two previous attempts, the undaunted teenager completed a seventeen-mile swim from Baldwin Beach to Dollar Point, covering the distance in 13 hours and 17 minutes- a major accomplishment for a woman at the time. As a matter of fact, it was a record she held, unbroken, for 42 years. I knew her story needed to be told and long story, short, Erline came to South Lake Tahoe twice, in 2014 and 2018, to WOW standing room only audiences with her swimming stories.

This time, Erline arrived with her daughter, Julie, and son-in-law, Keith. It was a first visit for them so with only one day for exploring, we decided to embark on the 72 mile long Lake Tahoe Scenic Byway, which circumnavigates the lake via U.S. Highway 50, State Route 28, and U.S. Highway 89. This loop offers stunning views of the lake, surrounding mountains, and charming towns. But first a stop at the place where this friendship all began, the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum.
Diane Johnson curated a wonderful retrospective of Erline's accomplishments which not only includes her treasures from that monumental event but also a fantastic slide show telling Erline's story for those who don't have the pleasure of hearing it firsthand. Wow. Erline was so surprised.

A must is always a peek into the box of archived materials.

After a trip down Memory Lane, we began our trip down New Memory Lane.
I love cheesy photo opportunities. Isn't this fun?

Of the many things Erline wished to do while here, one was to visit Truckee. After a delightful al fresco lunch, we went to Word after Word Books.
Erline is a huge Todd Borg fan (who isn't?). When I learned the author was doing a book signing, I knew I had to introduce the two.
Erline was eager to get several copies of book #23 in the Owen McKenna Mystery Thriller series and I was eager to see Todd again. He has been a presence on my blog almost as much as Scrabble. He is a delightful, award-winning murder mystery writer who launches his newest novel at the South Lake Tahoe Library every summer but I had to miss him this year. Oh, and he is just the coolest guy around.

Since we had a 72 mile drive, the group got a lot of Lake Tahoe history. I was so in my element.
And while a swim couldn't happen, feet in the lake was a nice substitution.
"Eating, and hospitality in general,
is a communion, and any meal worth attending by yourself
is improved by the multiples of those with whom it is shared."
-Jesse Browner
The catalyst for this entire visit was a connection I made with Anneliese at The Lake by Locals. She hadn't heard of Erline and once she did, she knew she had to add her to oral history project. What fun to hear, yet again, the story of such an accomplishment.

As a matter of fact, in the July 25, 2003 Lodi News-Sentinel, Dr. Mary Jo Kane, director of the Tucker Center for Research of Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota wrote, "I propose that her accomplishment was even greater because of lack of support, funding, and training resources available to girls at that time."
Yes, our summer is always improved by the multiples of those with whom it is shared. What an unforgettable couple of days. Wow.

History Lesson with Erline

I wrote about Erline Christopherson, after we had a long phone conversation in April.  A few days ago, she called and wanted to come to Tahoe and to meet me. I was pretty excited since she's famous here. Fifty one years ago, Erline, as a 16 year old girl, fulfilled her childhood dream- to be the first woman to swim across Lake Tahoe and made nation-wide news headlines.

Knowing Erline was coming, the amazing team at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum selected some of the memorabilia she had donated and made a new exhibit- just in time for her visit.  Needless-to-say, Erline was truly touched.
Her sister, brother-in-law and niece joined her.  She delighted in sharing her incredible stories.  She told of her difficulties and her sense of pride in completing this amazing endurance swim- finally (third time's a charm)!
The exhibit has Erline's swimsuit, a trophy and several ribbons.  One photo, on display, shows her in The Outdoorsman, shopping with the owner.  She said he let her pick any swimsuit that she wanted.  The resulting photo was used as a publicity poster in front of the shop.
After we all had lunch on our back deck, we walked to the Lake- a place Erline obviously loves.  No visit here is the same without getting one's feet wet. Next visit, we're swimming together.  What a wonderful opportunity for all of us!

With Erline in Emerald Bay...

Yesterday, Erline and Chesta arrived for a several day Sierra Sojourn. If you've been reading this blog, you know Erline.

Erline is here to do a presentation at the South Lake Tahoe Library tomorrow evening. In the meantime, Bob and Jenny escorted us to Emerald Bay.
While there, Chesta and Erline toured Vikingsholm Castle. This was a first for both.
Then Erline and I went for a swim in the wonderful, albeit chilly, waters of Lake Tahoe.
What a perfect way to reconnect with the Lake and old friends. Life is good!
"...at last the Lake burst upon us—a noble sheet of blue water lifted six thousand three hundred feet above the level of the sea, and walled in by a rim of snow-clad mountain peaks that towered aloft full three thousand feet higher still! ... As it lay there with the shadows of the mountains brilliantly photographed upon its still surface I thought it must surely be the fairest picture the whole earth affords." —Mark Twain

Erline Christopherson Presents...

Five years ago, while volunteering at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum, I discovered a box full of memorabilia, donated by Erline Christopherson.

In 2014, this living legend came to our South Lake Tahoe Library to tell her amazing story. She shared her feat via historic videos, photos and wonderful humor.
Since that first presentation was so well attended we thought we'd invite Erline back for an encore. She said yes and tonight was the magical repeat performance.
Prior to heading to the library, we hosted Erline's family and friends for some backyard fun.

Every seat was full and the audience was mesmerized by this living legend.
Swimmers of all ages were there to hear the history. Everyone was enthralled and delighted by Erline.
Erline stated, "I've wanted to swim Lake Tahoe ever since I first saw it, -when I was eight or nine years old." She attained her dream. Our community is so fortunate to have had this opportunity to hear her unforgettable memories making Lake Tahoe history. So very, very cool.

Erline Christopherson Reliving History...

In 1962, when she was only 16, Erline became the first woman to ever swim the length of Lake Tahoe (22 miles). This was world news and she became quite a celebrity.

Today, thanks to Bob and Jenny (and their wonderful pontoon boat), Erline had the chance to share her memories with us, as we revisited that day 52 years ago, in Emerald Bay.
It is amazing listening to the stories of how the record breaking swim came to be. It was like it was yesterday and we were mesmerized.
While in the Bay and since it had been almost 20 years since I climbed to the Tea House on Fannette Island, Jenny and I ventured forth. What fun.

Also reliving the memories with Erline was Mary, the high school friend who was there for that unforgettable day.
Circa 1962.
On Wednesday, Erline will share her story as part of our Friends of the Library Program Series. She will show vintage film and photos of the day. She will share it with the entire community. Yet, for today, we few were given a glimpse into how awesome this feat was. We were are so impressed!

Erline Christopherson Phillips Visits...

Erline has been mentioned on this blog a few times. I was so happy to hear that Tahoe was on her current travel itinerary.

Our first stop was a visit with Diane at the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum.
The archive room is where I found a box of Erline's memorabilia which started our relationship several years ago.
All of the artifacts from Erline's historical 1962 swim, across the length of Lake Tahoe, has been scanned and were wonderful to see on the 'big screen'.

We then had to put our feet in the icy lake water. It has become our tradition!

Note the spectacular rainbow that was the reward for a blustery day.

We ended our day together with Jan, Chris, Erline and family at our cabin for a cozy lunch. It was a fabulous reunion of reconnecting, reminiscing and planning for the next get together.
