Don't you enjoy receiving a book, which you never would have picked for yourself, and then discovering that you not only love it, but that it was eye-opening as well? Thank you, Susie!Reading People: How Seeing the World Through the Lens of Personality Changes Everything by Anne Bogel is a book that explores popular personality frameworks like StrengthsFinder, Enneagram, and Myers-Briggs to help readers understand themselves and others better, leading to improvements in relationships, career, and spiritual life. The author uses personal stories and research to explain how these tools foster self-awareness and empathy, making it easier to navigate life, love, and work by understanding why people act the way they do.
“The frameworks in this book can highlight what upsets you (and why) and what makes you hum. They can help you understand what’s causing friction in your relationships, and what to do about it. They can open your eyes to what’s really going on in situations that currently make you batty.”

Love languages, temperaments, and cognitive functions all vary. The differences which make the world extra interesting can also lead to unnecessary frustrations. Knowledge is truly power. Interesting, right?The only free test I could find online was the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a framework rooted in Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. The results reveal a personality type that represents one of sixteen distinct patterns. Mine, ESFJ, is the second most common personality type, representing 12% of the population. Researching me more thoroughly was indeed eye-opening. This type draws energy from social interaction (Extraverted), focuses on present details (Sensing), makes decisions based on values and empathy (Feeling), and prefers structure and organization (Judging). Interestingly, when I googled images for ESFJ-Consul, it often is represented by someone carrying a birthday cake. Oh how I love birthdays!
I learned a great deal about myself and those who are in my life. There's greater tolerance when there's understanding. As a matter of fact, the core message of Reading People is that understanding personality is a tool for self-acceptance and for better understanding and accepting others, even if they are different from you. While the message is a simple one, it's good to hear it. I plan to study this book often.
"I've come to think understanding personality
is like holding a good map.
That map can't take you anywhere.
It doesn't change your location;
you're still right where you were before.
But the map's purpose isn't to move you;
it's to show you the lay of the land."
