Writing Group: Lasts & Firsts
As Summer seems to be slowly disappearing, I've been lamenting all the lasts this time of year commemorates. Already I've experienced too many 'lasts': concerts at the Lake, boating to Emerald Bay, goodbyes to summer-only friends, and now that Labor Day has passed, even fashion dictates that the opportunity to wear white shoes has become a 'last'.
Days are already noticeably shorter and the crisp breezes signal Summer's end is near.
As I was pouting about the soon departing Summer blissfulness, I began to remember all the firsts the next season will bring. Thinking of these new-to-Fall, followed closely by Winter, firsts, I found myself feeling an eagerness to embrace it all. It has been several years since we were in Tahoe long enough to witness the changing seasons.
I remember loving the days when I could knowingly dress in a cozy sweater and actually wear it throughout the entire day. Oh, and how delightful it will be to savor hot tea on the front porch when the weather allows me to see my own breath. Hours will spent there, draped in a warm blanket, with a good book in my lap.
A favorite part of Fall has always been the flashes of colors discovered unexpectedly. I eagerly await the first golden hues of slowly transforming Aspens whose brightness, contrasting with the brilliant blue sky, is unforgettable. Pumpkins found everywhere add a burst of glorious orange on earth's Autumn pallet. Fall colors are some of my most favorite colors.
Winter brings with it the first true quietness. The extreme void of any noise that exists, after the first blanketing of fresh snow, is indescribable. The silence is only interrupted by the audible joy of a child who has caught the first snowflake upon her tongue.
Knit caps, warm gloves, long underwear, snow boots, and thick scarves are awakened from their long slumber and greeted like old friends. There's a vibrant giddiness that envelopes me when Winter's 'firsts' appears. I'll be ready for them when they arrive but before then, I have more Summer 'lasts' to experience, savor, and remember. "Summer, you are my favorite hello and my hardest goodbye!"
