Two Days in Tehachapi

I try to visit the quaint town of Tehachapi, home to my dear friend, Leslie, and her equally dear Mom, Barbara, at least once a year. The stars aligned and our brief visit was just what we all needed.

Barbara, Leslie, and I drove to Bakersfield to have lunch with Leslie's 44 year old son, Ivan. It is always special when he takes the time, out of his busy schedule, to hang out with his Mom's old college chum.

Oh man, how cute were we back in my college days!?
An interesting pause, and cool animal rescue story, was learned at this 52 acre ranch located near Leslie's neighborhood.
The mission of the United Pegasus Foundation is to provide a safe haven for equines coming off the racetracks. The Foundation believes that no equine should be denied a second career or a dignified retirement, no matter the reason. Since 1994, they have proudly provided retirements, rehabilitation, and adoptions to hundreds of former race horses and thousands of other breeds, keeping them from an uncertain destiny. This location was acquired in 2020. I've never seen so many horses there. They looked very happy.

What a delightful scene to come upon on one's travels.
Our favorite activity, when together, is play Scrabble. This was a game in which I did exceptionally well. It has been a long time since I was able to play all 7 tiles. at once, for an extra 50 points (for those who do not Scrabble). What fun. I won't show you the games in which Leslie creamed me.

Leslie is not an early riser. I am and I'm always rewarded for my efforts.
“Life. This morning the sun made me adore it.
It had, behind the dripping pine trees,
the oriental brightness, orange and crimson,
of a living being, a rose and an apple,
in the physical and ideal fusion of a true and daily paradise.”
― Juan Ramón Jiménez
Two days in Tehachapi is never long enough! Oh, but what fun we had.
