Scenes from the Road South...
It has been a few months since we've traveled our favorite highway- U.S. Route 395. I thought I'd share a few scenes, framed by our windshield. The day began early and quite chilly. By the time we were in Temecula, 9½ hours later, it was 100° with the promise of a Summer storm.
A much needed coffee break was had in Lee Vining at El Mono Motel. Built in 1927 by Peter Gilli, it is one of the oldest buildings here. Known for its 1920s architecture, off-beat and colorful guestrooms, and its welcoming atmosphere for budget travelers, we have only stopped for its resident coffeehouse, Latte Da. I'd love to spend more time there someday, but today it was merely a waystation on the trek elsewhere.
"The two impulses in travel are to get away from home,
and the other is to pursue something –
a landscape, people, an exotic place.
Certainly finding a place that you like
or discovering something unusual
is a very sustaining thing in travel.”
– Paul Theroux
