A Return to the Front Porch Gallery

When a new exhibit is on display, we must visit the Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad.

We were there for UNVEILING CREATIVITY: ART AS CONVERSATION.
"This exhibit explores art as an ongoing process of creation, from when an artist first gathers moments of inspiration for a new piece to the time when a viewer responds to the artwork. When viewers respond to art, they co-create a new conversation and that experience is art in and of itself. A range of mediums are represented: collage, fiber, assemblage, and painting. During the run we invite the community to participate with us in thought provoking programs and events related to making art, discussing the work, and viewing the exhibition."

This Lino print carved by Carol Abbe was absolutely amazing. I've tried this difficult medium and wow, I am amazed at this piece and the artist who created it.

The Front Porch Gallery continues to showcase enviable talents. Kathy Silva's woven Dock of the Bay made me ooh and aah.
There was just something about Janet Keto's Fragrance Exotica. I do love collages!
I'm continuously impressed by Cathy Carey. I loved Rabbit Way Up and the whimsy it displays. And it has introduced us to a new hiking trail (this captures the Way Up Trail to Harmony Grove Overlook in San Marcos).
Plastic or Princess by Kathryn Peterson was one of three impressive pieces in this exhibit. I wished I had a girlfriend there to have a conversation about this award-winning dress collection, made from recycled materials. What is truly surprising is the fact that all of the clothing is wearable!
What a creative way to recycle single-use plastic bags. I would so wear her dresses!
I will never look at a deflated Mylar balloon the same again.
The Women's Circle was assembled using uncut, vintage doilies that were handmade by Kathryn's family members. Wow.
Homage to the Women's Circle was a necklace she created adorned with images of the crafters of the dollies. What a wonderful family treasure.
Then it was crafting time. "Artist Trading Cards are fun, economical and friendly way to share art and ideas - start a conversation with friends and reach out to friends you haven't met yet!"
"Leave your card for the next art makers to enjoy and you can see the works of previous artists! Collage, paint, draw, write messages and poems! Artist Trading Cards are 3.5 inches tall and 2.5 inches wide. Same size as many playing cards. Most are rectangular but experiment with arched tops, folding flaps and pockets. Include things that fold or swing out of the card, little flaps and doors, waterfall card effects, limbs on paper doll cards and fabric, ribbon and thread tails. It should have a little thickness to it. Experiment - Have fun!"

So these are the words I was drawn towards. For those who know me well, you are probably not surprised by some. A couple are accurate adjectives (fun, quirky) and one is a true goal (Focus). What would your Artist Trading Card look like? Shall we commit to doing an exchange?

Each time I enter the Front Porch Gallery I'm inspired to be more creative. I find it to be a true Carlsbad treasure. Maybe George Bernard Shaw was right when he said, "You use a glass mirror to see your face. You use works of art to see your soul."
