Canstruction® Orange County

We met Julie at South Coast Plaza so we could carpool to the Cruisin' for a Cure event, Saturday. We detoured into the Mall for a coffee and had the good fortune to discover art for a cause!

Canstruction® Orange County combines the fun of a design-build competition with an ingenious way to help feed hungry people. Local prominent architectural, engineering, planning, and design firms, and students mentored by these professionals, create phenomenal structures built entirely out of canned food.

Judging occurs in categories with the People's Choice being an online vote where each vote equals a $1 donation. This one was the fan favorite and also took the prize for Best Use of Labels.
Each sculpture has a thorough description. Minions of Cans to Annihilate Hunger. This structure, based on the movie Despicable Me 4 (starring minions Kevin and Bob), was designed to get children to think of different ways to help others in need. The craftsmen played with a variety of cans to make use of labels to define details such as the overalls, the teeth, the mouth, the tongue. The hands and feet were created with sardine cans to differentiate from the rest of the body parts. The eyeballs were created with larger tuna cans, but they are floating in cardboard goggles adding depth and a more realistic look. The potential meal played an important role in can selection. With this sculpture, one could prepare a nutritious tuna salad with mayonnaise, relish and mustard. Sardines and Salmon could start the meal as the appetizer and end the culinary treat with a variety of refreshing teas to sip. Clever.
The Fight Against Hunger Starts with One Piece. This amazing ship was constructed with 6,066 cans/items of food and won for Best Original Design. It really demands close study to understand its magnitude. Wow.

The suctions on the octopus' tentacles are Lifesavers. Oh man, so dang clever.
Dreams CAN Come True Down in the Bayou! won for the Best Meal and consists of 8,050 cans. "Louis, the trumpet-playing alligator, made his musical debut in Disney's 2009 animated film, The Princess and the Frog. Louis is now leading his very own Jazz Band Canned Food Pantry Jamboree all the way from Bayou Country to Orange County. His dream is to share the bounty of the bayou with everyone. He's gonna blow his horn 'til the cows come home to encourage everyone to dig a little deeper and bring awareness to food."
If you wanted to recreate this your shopping list would include 4,388 cans of diced green chilis, 2,989 containers of baby food (green beans, apple avocado, prune, and strawberry banana yogurt), 475 packages of pasta, 90 cans of green peas, 60 jerky sticks, and 48 fruit strips. Yum!

The award for Most Cans went to The Grand CAN-yon! with 8,120 items to fill a shelf.
At the close of the exhibition all of the canned food used in these structures will be donated to the OC Food Bank for distribution to shelters, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs. Recognized for its commitment to innovation, hunger relief and collaboration, Canstruction’s work has helped raise over 40 million pounds of food since 1992, nationally. Its events are held annually in over 150 cities around the world including Australia, South America, Europe, and Asia. I had no idea. I CANnot wait for next year!
