Tahoe Mythbusting at the SLT Library...

Tonight's Friends of the Library presentation was described, "Join us to uncover the truth behind Lake Tahoe’s popular myths and legends! Sarah Hockensmith, from the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science, will debunk some common misconceptions, while also exploring the basin’s unique history, geology, flora, and fauna."

Sarah is amazing and dispelled so many local myths, I should have taken better notes to be able to share them.
The one that surprised me and my other Forest Service volunteer friends was the fact that the Lake was not formed by a volcano... it was here millions of years before the eruption happened. Hmmm.
No, there are not a bunch of preserved dead bodies floating about in the bottom of the Lake (mafia or otherwise). Yes, beavers are indigenous. No, bears do not hibernate. Yes, bats can carry rabies but they are not dirty (Sarah thinks they are awesome). There is no correlation between a big winter and a terrible presence of yellow jackets in the summer. Interesting... all of it.
Fifty-two of us came to the library to learn more about the area we love. That's a pretty awesome way to spend a Wednesday night.
