The Medora Hot Air Balloon Rally

We awoke, on our 39th wedding anniversary, with a greeting by hot air balloons.

The Medora Hot Air Balloon Rally marks its 24th annual event (and our last morning in town), serving as a traditional weekend capstone to the final days of the Medora Musical.
Veteran balloon pilot John Boulger, from Fargo, helped start the tradition after taking local figures Harold and Sheila Schafer for rides. Sheila Schafer suggested turning the scenic flights over the North Dakota Badlands into an annual gathering. It's no surprise that the Schafers were involved. What wonderful patrons of Medora.

The event routinely coincides with the closing weekend of the tourist season, bringing thousands of visitors to downtown Medora and the Medora Campground. Our timing could not have been more perfect. We are pinching ourselves.

but in looking outward together in the same direction.”
