Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue

Wanting to do something unique with my four grandchildren, I booked a tour for them, me, and their moms at Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue.

This very cool place is dedicated to: "the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife; the promotion, understanding, appreciation, protection and conservation of wildlife through both our Educational Outreach Programs and our advocacy efforts."
Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue believes that in order to make a strong impact on wildlife, they must do their part to educate the community on wildlife and the issues they face.
So here we were, with docent Richard, to tour and learn. The focus was on native wildlife species and their natural instincts including diet, behavior and habitat. His hope was to diminish any fear of wildlife and encourage wildlife appreciation through knowledge of native species and how they contribute to our local ecosystem.

Interestingly, Sonoma County boasts incredibly diverse habitats, from rugged coastlines with beaches and salt marshes to inland oak woodlands, chaparral, rolling grasslands, redwood forests, and vital freshwater systems like vernal pools, rivers, and estuaries, making it a biodiversity hotspot supporting countless species, birds (440), mammals (70), and rare plants within its varied landscapes.

The education Ambassadors are all non-releasable native wildlife. Species of their current education ambassadors include: Swainson's Hawk, Turkey Vulture, two Coyotes, Mountain Lion, Bobcat, and two varieties of fox.

After walking on the wild side, we explored ways of keeping domesticated animals safe from predators. We were all enamored with this CATIO. This very clever enclosure keeps cats safe and also protects wild birds from predatory housecats. I love this.

I appreciated the fact that when our day was done, the grandchildren had the opportunity to love on animals (that wouldn't eat them).
For over 1½ hours all seven of us were focused and left feeling very informed. It was a special opportunity to appreciate Jane Goodall's reminder, "Only if we understand... can we care. Only if we care… will we help them. Only if we help... shall they be saved." What a special day!
