Frolicking on FOLLY

Our home base for the week is a darling cottage on Folly Island.

Folly Island has a history marked by piracy, shipping accidents, and Civil War occupation. Originally named Coffin Island for shipwrecks and the unfortunate practice of leaving cholera victims ashore, the island was a key supply depot for the Union Army during the Siege of Charleston. Later, it developed into a resort destination, famously inspiring George Gershwin to write Porgy and Bess. Got to love a place with history!
I was intrigued by its name. Folly is a rather negative term, so unlike this piece of coastal paradise. It turns out that the island was first deeded as a royal grant in 1696 and given the name "Folly" from the Old English term for dense foliage. Hmmm.
Our goal for the morning was to find a place for yet another cup of coffee. We walked the 1.1 mile trek to 'town' along the shoreline. Needless-to-say, the beachcombing made the journey a leisurely one.

This adorable crab was smaller than a dime.
The antics of this slightly bigger crab had all us beachcombers entertained.

Liquid bliss was discovered at Center Street Coffee.
This was deemed the best iced latte I've ever had by our connoisseur son.

We returned to our cottage for lunch and quiet time via a stroll through our neighborhood. Such delights and so Low Country.

The day ended back at the beach for promised 'swim in the sea' time for the girls.

This is how the grandparents spent part of their afternoon at the beach!
“At the beach, life is different.
Time doesn’t move hour to hour
but mood to moment.
We live by the currents, plan by the tides,
and follow the sun.”

We would have been only 83 miles from you where we stayed in SC a few weeks ago. I would have figured out a way to meet you if the timing would have been the same week:) Someday!

Enjoy the sunshine!
