We returned to Taylor Creek for one last Kokanee salmon viewing before spawning season comes to an end.

They say the salmon return to the place they were born due to a familiar scent. Wow! The minute we got close, we started to smell carcasses of spawned fish. There were far more deceased than the beautiful red we'd seen weeks ago. |

What we learned more about, on this visit, was the California Golden beaver, a mammal native to the High Sierra until their extirpation in the nineteenth century. Castor canadensis were re-introduced to the Tahoe Basin between 1934 and 1949 in order to prevent stream degradation and to promote wetland restoration. |

The active beavers created such a successful dam, it was flooding the area and had to be minimized a bit. It was interesting to watch. |

Taylor Creek Visitor Center is one of our favorite spots for a stroll and to learn more about the natural side of our hometown. |
